School Punishment

I. Description of Problem or Issue

Many children now are disciplined poorly and the punishments are not fit for the crime. From the Zero Tolerance Policy, to not being strict enough, our project looks at discipline and punishment used in schools. We examined the change in discipline and punishment over time, how it differs in schools, the difference in public and private schools, the enforcers of the punishment, and the existence of the Zero Tolerance Policy. As teachers, we must all know the pros and cons of both good and bad discipline and how to deal with it. Whether it means enforcing them, acting upon them, or making changes in the school system, discipline and punishment are important areas of discussion for today’s teachers.

II. Research Summary

Nathaniel's research dealt with how discipline has changed over time. He looked at how the students treated each other, how they treated the teachers, the rights they had, and how the teachers disciplined the children. In the research, it was found that students often had much more respect for teachers back in the day. Teachers disciplined students much differently as well, with physical punishment such as the paddle and rulers. He found the two major cases that expanded student rights and in a way, killed the traditional school disciplinary techniques. Nathaniel's research also yielded new ways to discipline students and enforce certain punishments. Many resources gave valuable options to discipline students in effective ways, instead of suspending them or detaining them. There seemed to be many varying viewpoints on whether the change in discipline was good or bad, but the majority of authors (along with our group) believe that the change of discipline over time has been a negative one that needs to be fixed.

Abby's research helped us get a better understanding of the zero tolerance policy and to see both sides of enforcing it in schools. She found why the policy was first made, and when, along with giving many pro's of enforcing it. Such as, a safer community, school, and learning environment for the children and also treating everyone equal. However, our project also benefitted from her research because of the con's of the policy. For instance, treating everyone equal but not fairly, discouraging students from their school work and lessening their love for school, and increasing the drop out rate.

Stephanie's research was very useful. She found lots of information about school discipline and urban school. She gave us a better understand about how students in urban school are being treated. She also found out advice how we as teachers can improve school discipline.

John's research dealt with the difference in the implementation of punishment in public and private schools. He gave us good examples of how private schools use rules and punishment to increase student participation in academics and athletics. He also expelled the myth that corporal punishment is commonplace in private schools.

II. Group Product Overview

We are planning on beginning the class with a brief introduction to our topic. Then we are going to use a video that we created to describe each of our reasearch questions. We will take turns showing our video clips and describing our specific questions. Then we will finish the lesson with an interactive Jeopardy Game in order to ensure the class has learned something during the lesson and to get everyone involved.

VI. Notes for Next Year's Students

-Someone could do a project on the Zero Tolerance Policy alone, because there is a lot of information on that.
-Another decision might be to research corporal punishment, because although it deals with punishment and discipline, it is a whole other topic than punishment.
-Possibly the roles of a principal. We did some research on who enforces punishment and discipline, but it might be interesting to see the their responsibilities other than just enforcing punishment. They could even do the roles of a principal, teacher, superintendant, etc.
-Another decision might be to research what are the punishment and how do students react towards them.
-The difference between enforcement of rules in public and private schools was actually pretty difficult to find information on, but the topic itself is very interesting.
